BOTOX^® Cosmetic

This treatment works by temporarily altering the facial muscles beneath the skin that form dynamic wrinkles on the surface. Once injected into precise areas of facial muscles, impulses from the nerves to the facial muscles are blocked. As a result, the underlying facial muscles relax and the skin gradually smoothes out. Most patients notice improvement within 3 – 5 days and reach the maximum improvement within a few weeks.

The effects of treatment will last approximately 3 – 6 months, after which many patients choose to return to Dr. Sorokin for a repeat procedure.

The product insert for BOTOX says that most people will require 20 units of BOTOX to treat between the eyebrows. In addition, 12 units is the recommended dose for addressing crow’s feet next to each eye. Another 20 units can be used to treat the frontalis or forehead muscle. This is a total of 64 units for the average patient according to the product insert guide published by Allergan. Some patients need more and some a little less. Use too little BOTOX and either there will be minimal results or it will not last long enough. BOTOX is purchased by the unit, with cost per unit varying from doctor’s office to doctor’s office.

Many people will ask to use less BOTOX. Perhaps they feel that they don’t need as much because they are sensitive, or they’re afraid of looking overdone or “plastic”, or perhaps budget is an issue. However, using less than the recommended dose of BOTOX will result in either BOTOX that does not last very long because too few units are being placed in too many areas or areas that will not respond. Still, we have many patients that only use 20 units “everywhere” and are very happy with the subtle effect it provides. These products are neurotoxins used for facial rejuvenation.

BOTOX is onabotulinumtoxinA and is the most widely used product in the United States. Dysport® is abobotulinumtoxinA, a similar chemical to BOTOX and is also used for temporarily minimizing wrinkles on the face. Xeomin® is incobotulinumtoxinA and Jeuveau® is prabotulinoumtoxin-A. These are all products used for cosmetic purposes to minimize small muscles in the face from producing wrinkling. They are all neurotoxins and truthfully, are all similar.

So, which is better? Every physician that uses these products has their own preferences. Dr. Sorokin feels that Botox Cosmetic is the gold standard for other toxins to be compared. He has used it in thousands of patients and gets great, predictable results with Botox. He stocks Dysport and Jeuveau in the office as occasionally a patient will request one of the other products having used it elsewhere. He used to use Xeomin but found that it hurt more while injecting and didn’t last nearly as long.  While Botox costs more to purchase from Allergan than the other products do, it is very predictable and produces a nice consistent result. Dr. Sorokin has used all three toxins on many patients and in his experience feels that Dysport diffuses somewhat more and results may not be as precise. Other docs may feel differently but this is his opinion. While profit margin is higher on Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin, Dr. Sorokin does not feel that this is a good reason to use them. Thus, we use Botox unless specifically asked to use a different neurotoxin by a patient.

Our BOTOX treatments are so popular because they are safe, quick and effective. Dr. Sorokin will apply an anesthetic cream on your skin prior to treatment. He then injects a small amount of BOTOX into the area of the targeted wrinkles and immediately applies ice when the entire process is complete.

You should avoid engaging in heavy physical exercise, applying cosmetics, or laying down flat for at least 4 hours after the injections. You should also avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area for at least 24 hours.

The price of botox is $14/unit. The official recommended dosage of Botox for the forehead, crow’s feet and between the eyebrows is 64 units of Botox.
