Is Your Surgeon Safe?

The most important thing when selecting your plastic surgeon is to verify that the physician is board certified in plastic surgery. Many doctors are board certified but not in plastic surgery. You should verify that the surgeon received certification by visiting American Board of Plastic Surgery’s website and using the search form at the bottom of the page. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery have:

  • Completed an accredited medical school (typically four years of medical school) – Completed at least five years of residency in which two to three years is plastic surgery specific
  • Successfully completed written examinations in plastic surgery
  • Successfully completed oral examinations by other plastic surgeons
  • Participate in continued education and recertification
