American Society of Plastic Surgery 2016 Statistics

American Society of Plastic Surgeon Member Surgeon Logo

This week the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) released its annual National Clearinghouse of Plastic Surgery statistics.  Each year, plastic surgeons are surveyed on the numbers of procedure that they perform.  This information is then compiled and statistics are released.

The information is interesting to say the least and I share some of the highlights here.

The top five plastic surgeries performed throughout the United States in 2016 are:

  1. Breast Augmentation (290,467 procedures)
  2. Liposuction (235,237 procedures)
  3. Rhinoplasty (223,018 procedures)
  4. Blepharoplasty (209,020 procedures)
  5. Facelifts (131,106 procedures)

Breast augmentation is the most commonly performed surgery across our nation and the statistics show that this grew 4% from 2015.  This category does not include breast lifts which account for another 101,264 surgeries!

This somewhat mirrors my practice where I do mostly breast augmentations followed by liposuction.  I also do a fair number of abdominoplasties (tummy tuck) which “only” had 127,633 across the country in 2016!  Further down my personal list are eyelids and facelifts but just like my practice there are many more of these than things I rarely do like thigh lifts which only had 9,929 performed!

On the minimally-invasive procedure side for 2016, the top procedures were:

  1. Botulinum Toxin – Botox, Dysport, etc (7 million procedures)
  2. Soft Tissue Fillers – Juvederm, Restylane, etc (2.6 million procedures)
  3. Chemical Peels (1.36 million procedures)
  4. Laser Hair Removal (1.1 million procedures)
  5. Microdermabrasion (775,000 procedures)

This also shows the Botox category increasing in popularity with 4% more injections than 2015!  Once again this mirrors the non-invasive side of my practice as I daily inject Botox and Fillers as my #1 and #2 procedures and see so much interest in peels, microdermabrasion, and laser hair removal.  I have also found laser tattoo removal to be extremely popular in my practice but this is not listed in the statistics.

I find the data very interesting and believe that the popularity of these procedures will continue to grow!  I hear lots of media buzz about fringe procedures like fat grafting to the buttocks (18,489 procedures) and lip reduction (3,547 procedures) but data shows very few of these performed.  I believe there is more talk about it than actual surgeries.  Fat grafting to the breast doesn’t even have numbers listed in the statistics despite lots of talk about it this year.

I look forward to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) Statistics which will be released in the next few weeks and comparing the two databases.   Stay tuned!
