For centuries, poets and storytellers have called the eyes the window to the soul, and it is certainly true that one of the first things others notice is the eyes. So most people want their eyes to look their best. Drooping eyelids, dark circles, puffiness, and wrinkles around the eyes may make a person look tired or much older than they really are. Board-certified Cherry Hill, NJ plastic surgeon, Dr. Evan Sorokin, offers eyelid surgery at his New Jersey office for a more refreshed and youthful look. Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, gives women and men a more youthful eye appearance by correcting a variety of concerns like:

  • Sagging upper eyelid skin
  • Dark circles or bags under the eyes
  • Wrinkles surrounding the eyes
  • A tired appearance or puffiness due to inherited factors

Surgical Technique

Dr. Sorokin performs eyelid surgery in about 1-3 hours. He begins by making tiny incisions in the natural contours around the eyes, which in almost all cases leaves no visible scarring. He focuses first on the upper eyelids to remove any excess and hanging skin, and fatty tissue, and then tighten loose skin. He then targets puffiness and dark circles in the lower eyelids. In some instances, Dr. Sorokin might use laser skin resurfacing to smooth the lower eyelid areas or BOTOX to firm fine lines and wrinkles in the forehead region, which will compliment the surgical outcome nicely.

During/After the Surgery

While the procedure itself is nearly painless, patients sometimes report minor discomfort following the surgery, which can be treated with over-the-counter medication. After surgery, Dr. Sorokin strongly encourages patients to get plenty of rest and limit their movement to speed up the healing process and reduce recovery time. Patients may have difficulty watching television or reading for the first few days after surgery, so patients may want to stock up on music or books on tape to listen to. Also, patients will need to keep their head elevated while sleeping for a couple of days after the procedure to minimize swelling.

For most jobs, patients can return to work in a matter of days, though patients may want to wait for bruising to clear completely. Complications are rare, and patients can minimize the risk for potential problems by carefully following the post-operative directions Dr. Sorokin gives after the surgery.

Expected Cost

Eyelid surgery usually costs between $2,500-$5,000, if it is performed alone. Many patients include eyelid surgery with another facial surgery, like a facelift, which will increase the total cost of the procedures.

Eyelid Surgery FAQs

Permanent Results?

The results of eyelids surgery should be permanent. As the patient continues to age, excess skin may start to form on the upper eyelids, but this is usually a problem within the brow and can be fixed with a brow lift.

Nonsurgical Options?

Injectable fillers can be used to add temporary volume into the wrinkles around the skin, but a more permanent solution is eyelid surgery. Eyelid surgery is also the only way to get rid of excess skin that makes the eyes sag and droop. Dr. Sorokin will assess the needs of the patient during the consultation and present the best options to achieve the patient’s goals.

Visible Scarring?

During eyelid surgery, Dr. Sorokin makes the smallest possible incisions and he keeps them within the natural creases of the eyelid, so the scars are almost invisible. Each patient will be given post-operative scar care instructions that will help the incisions heal cleanly and fully so they will flatten out and fade into the skin over time.
