Breasts that sag or have lost volume can cause an unflattering appearance and deflate a woman’s confidence. Breast lift surgery, also known as a mastopexy, raises and reshapes sagging breasts. As a woman ages, skin becomes less elastic, which causes the breasts to lose their natural shape and firmness. Breast enhancement specialist, Dr. Evan Sorokin, is a board certified plastic surgeon in Cherry Hill, NJ who has spent years becoming a master at sculpting breasts for a restored look and natural-feeling result. A breast lift may be a great option for women who want to:

  • Elevate their breasts due to sagging caused by aging and gravity
  • Firm up breasts that have lost substance from pregnancy and subsequent breastfeeding
  • Re-align nipples or areolas that point down or to the side
  • Reduce the size of areolas that have become stretched out
  • Bring back natural suppleness after weight loss
  • Improve breasts with an irregular shape or appearance

Lift VS. Augmentation

You know that you're unhappy with the appearance of your breasts, but you may not know which plastic surgery options will give you the improvements you want. To put it simply, a breast lift raises and reshapes sagging breasts, while breast augmentation increases their size and volume. If you are looking to elevate drooping breasts or nipples without altering the current size of your breast, a lift by itself will meet your goals. However, patients who want both fuller and firmer breasts will need both a lift and augmentation to achieve their goals. Dr. Sorokin can also combine a breast reduction and lift to rejuvenate the entire breast area.

Surgical Technique

Breast lift surgery usually takes between 1.5-3 hours with the patient under general anesthesia. First, Dr. Sorokin will make an anchor-shaped incision along the underside of the breast and around the area where skin will be removed. This incision defines which breast tissue will be removed and how the nipple will be relocated. Dr. Sorokin then takes out excess skin and tissue from under the breast and repositions the nipple and areola to a higher location at the center of the breast. After this, the skin that surrounds the areola is brought down and sewn together to reshape the breast.

For patients with relatively small breasts and minimal sagging, Dr. Sorokin may use modified procedures that require less-extensive incisions. A common modified procedure is the doughnut (or concentric) mastopexy, that uses circular incisions around the areola and then, a doughnut-shaped area of skin is removed. Dr. Sorokin also uses other innovative surgical techniques including minimal incision methods and procedures that preserve nipple sensation. Regardless of which procedure is used, every breast is different, so Dr. Sorokin combines a substantial amount of practiced artistry with scientific technique to achieve a freshened, youthful result.

Immediately after the procedure is completed, bandages are applied to minimize bleeding, scarring, and movement of the breasts. In order to speed the healing process and recovery time, Dr. Sorokin will provide detailed post-operative instructions, including rest and limited movement. Once the bandages are removed at the follow-up visit, patients will be required to wear a special surgical bra for several weeks. Patients sometimes report minor discomfort after the surgery, which can be treated with oral medication.

Expected Cost

Dr. Sorokin gives each patient a customized treatment plan, so it is difficult to give an average cost for a breast lift surgery. The average pricing, however, generally ranges between $6,500-$9,500. Dr. Sorokin will work with patients during the consultation to create a treatment plan around their needs, goals, and budget.

Breast Lift FAQs

Lift or Augmentation?

If you are still unsure whether you should get a breast lift, breast augmentation, or both, Dr. Sorokin can assess your goals and breasts and help you decide. He has specialized in breast surgery for many years and believes in having open and honest discussions with his patients. He will guide you through the options that are best for your body. Consider your answers to these answers before your consultation with Dr. Sorokin:

  • Are you currently satisfied with the size of your breasts?
  • Do you feel that they sag or droop more than you would like?
  • Are you happy with the position of the nipple on each breast?
  • Do you have excess skin and lost volume from pregnancy or weight loss?

Combining Procedures?

When Dr. Sorokin combines a breast lift and augmentation into one surgery, he can create a dramatically younger and shapelier breast appearance. Benefits include:

  • Reduced cost compared to multiple surgeries
  • Consolidated, and therefore an overall shorter, recovery time
  • Overall increased satisfaction

Dr. Sorokin can also combine a breast lift with other surgeries for women who have other areas of their bodies they would like to address in addition to their breasts. A popular option is the Mommy Makeover, which often includes a tummy tuck, liposuction, and body contouring procedures, but it can incorporate other procedures to tailor the Mommy Makeover to each patient.

While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the post-operative directions from Dr. Sorokin. Complications may include reddened, visible scarring at the incision sites, asymmetry, tissue loss, loss of sensation, or hardening of the breast caused by formation of internal scar tissue. The procedures Dr. Sorokin uses both preoperatively and during surgery are designed to minimize the risk of complications.
