Many people work hard to eat right and exercise, but sometimes stubborn belly fat won't go away. As people age, the abdominal area is one of the most common places to develop excess fat and flabby, drooping skin. Many women want to get rid of stretch marks and excess fat that can occur after pregnancy, while men may be ready to tackle the beer gut that has been weighing them down. Board-certified plastic surgeon and body contouring specialist, Dr. Evan Sorokin, performs tummy tuck surgery in his New Jersey office to give patients the firm, fit midsection they can't get on their own.
A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, can give a variety of improvements, including:
- Eliminating abdominal fat that doesn't respond to diet or exercise
- Removing excess skin that remains after weight loss and pregnancy
- Tightening loose and separated abdominal muscles caused by pregnancy
- Aligning abdominal muscles for a more flattering appearance
Patients can expect the surgery to last anywhere from 1 to 4 hours, depending on their desired look and unique physiology. To begin the procedure, Dr. Sorokin makes an incision just above the pubic bone area and extends the incision horizontally across the lower abdomen and if needed, around to the back. The skin is then stretched away from the muscle tissue, and excess skin is removed. Abdominal muscle tissue is tightened to provide a firmly contoured stomach and well-defined waistline. Finally, Dr. Sorokin closes the incision by stitching the skin back into place. Sometimes the procedure requires an additional incision around the navel in order to provide the best results.
Tummy Tuck Reviews
"I am very happy with my experience at Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery. After 2 c-sections, breast feeding, and a 30 pound weight loss, by body was looking much older that it was - I had the wrinkly, saggy mommy belly, and saggy breasts. I felt wonderful and healthy, but didn't look as good as I felt. A friend recommended Dr. Sorokin because she was very happy with her liposuction experience. When I went to the office the first time for a consultation, I felt at ease immediately. What a wonderful staff! I scheduled my surgery, and after a tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast implants, I finally looked as great outside as I felt inside! I only wish that I had done it sooner! A friend was so impressed with how I looked, she scheduled her surgery with Dr. Sorokin a few months later. By the way, she looks great too, and was also very happy with her experience, and has recommended Dr. Sorokin to her friends and family as well. Definitely 5 star service!!!"- Google User / Google / Jun 18, 2009
"After the c-section birth of my daughter and 45 lb weight loss, my 36 year old tummy was no match to the energetic, fit body I felt like I had underneath. After receiving stellar remarks from a friend that had Breast Implants by Dr. Sorokin, I knew I had to check him out in my search for the perfect Dr. to give me a tummy tuck. I felt very comfortable from the minute I stepped in his office. Dr. Sorokin discussed all of my options and I walked out of there with realistic expectations. I had a full tummy tuck, lipo to the flanks, a breast lift with small saline implants. During my recovery, Dr. Sorokin was incredibly responsive and available almost instantly for any questions I had. I am thrilled to say that I now have a flat tummy with a very low scar and perky breasts. I'm wearing a bikini for the first time in 18 years! Thank you Dr. Sorokin! "I came to Dr. Sorokin after receiving a botched tummy tuck and smartlipo from a doctor who told me how he was Internationally known for smartlipo and traveled around the world training other professionals on this cutting edge procedure. He was 'board certified' but not in plastic surgery. Actually he was not a plastic surgeon at all! I am 44 years old and lost over 100 pounds many years ago so this tummy tuck was extremely important to me. I waited to have this procedure for a very long time. After this other doctor butchered me I was devastated. I didn't know what to do. I was afraid that another doctor would not want to work on me because I looked deformed. After doing some research I found Dr. Sorokin. From my first consolation I felt the compassion he and his staff had for me and my situation. He also informed me that I was never a good candidate for the smartlipo in certain areas of my body. He immediately came up with a surgical plan to fix my body. I felt so safe and reassured that I decided to also get breast augmentation done due having extremely different size breasts. Dr. Sorkin was very realistic and honest about the procedure and results. I had my tummy tuck, breast implants and lipo done in his Cherry Hill center and it was a great experience. His staff is warm and compassionate just like he is. After the surgery I called the office almost everyday because I was so nervous. He returned my call personally several times. It has been 10 months since my surgery and "- Google User / Google / Jun 18, 2012

"Have you ever had that daydream that something wonderful is going to happen to you to completely change your life, and music plays, and everything just looks clearer?? That is what I experienced after just meeting with Dr. Sorokin and his staff. I was in search for the perfect surgeon to do my breast augmentation, and there was NO DOUBT after spending my first 2 minutes with Dr. Sorokin that he was the one! The entire staff treated me, and still treats me, like I am family. Holly and Bella are amazing, but so are EVERYONE else who works at DVPS. I have never experienced a please where everyone LOVES their job! I had no pain after surgery (that's right, NO PAIN), was just a little uncomfortable, but went out to lunch with my mom 2 days after surgery. He is attentive, listens to what you want, and delivers. In my 34 years of life, I have NEVER felt more beautiful and feminine and sexy than I do now. He is an artist, and now a life long friend. I will never go to anyone else if I decide to have something else done, like a tummy tuck. You will never regret going to Dr. Sorokin, in fact, I urge you to call him RIGHT NOW! During/After the Surgery@headingTag>
For the first few days after the procedure, the abdominal area will be swollen and there will be some discomfort, which can be controlled by medication. Dr. Sorokin also uses pain pumps on all of his tummy tuck patients to minimize the pain involved in the procedure. Patients will have a drainage tube, which must be used for about a week. Patients will need to wear a support garment over the incision for several weeks. Dr. Sorokin will provide detailed instructions for showering and changing the bandages. Dr. Sorokin encourages patients to start walking as soon as possible to help blood circulation, and normal activities generally can be resumed in 2 weeks.
It may take up to a month before patients can engage in all their usual activities, and the body may need up to a year to adapt to the new abdominal configuration. The scars will look the worst during the first 3 to 6 months as they heal, but this is normal. After about 9 months, the scars should begin to flatten out and lighten in color. Abdominal scars from a tummy tuck are easily covered in clothing and bathing suits.
A tummy tuck can cost between $5,000-$10,000. A mini tummy tuck will be at the low end of the range while a full tummy tuck will be more expensive. Dr. Sorokin will discuss costs and financing at the consultation.

Tummy Tuck or Liposuction?@headingTag>
During your consultation, Dr. Sorokin will conduct a physical examination to help determine the best procedure to meet your cosmetic goals. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is the best choice for men and women with protruding abdomens caused by weak stomach muscles and excess skin and fat. Liposuction is an option for patients with toned skin but isolated pockets of fat. A tummy tuck actually repairs muscles and removes stretched skin and bulging fat, while liposuction simply removes fat. Dr. Sorokin commonly performs both procedures together for appropriate patients, often as part of a Mommy Makeover.
Full or Mini Tuck?@headingTag>
Tummy tuck surgery is designed to tighten the abdominal muscles and remove loose skin, two issues that are common after pregnancy or any significant weight loss. A full tummy tuck procedure addresses muscles and skin both above and below the belly button. In rare cases, only the muscle and skin below the belly button require tightening. In those situations, a mini-tummy tuck may be appropriate.
Any healthy adult with stubborn fatty areas can benefit from a body contouring surgery. A good candidate for tummy tuck surgery is someone who is in good health and whose weight doesn't fluctuate significantly. Liposuction removes fat from the body, and those fat cells never come back. However, liposuction isn't considered a weight-loss procedure. Fat cells that remain can still enlarge, so a healthy lifestyle is important. Patients who exercise regularly and have healthy eating habits will continue enjoying the results of liposuction for months and years.
Although tummy tuck surgery won't affect your pregnancy, patients should consider postponing the procedure until after they are finished having children. During surgery, the vertical abdominal muscles are tightened, and future pregnancies can separate those muscles.
