Overview

Many people work hard to eat right and exercise, but sometimes stubborn belly fat won't go away. As people age, the abdominal area is one of the most common places to develop excess fat and flabby, drooping skin. Many women want to get rid of stretch marks and excess fat that can occur after pregnancy, while men may be ready to tackle the beer gut that has been weighing them down. Board-certified plastic surgeon and body contouring specialist, Dr. Evan Sorokin, performs tummy tuck surgery in his New Jersey office to give patients the firm, fit midsection they can't get on their own.

A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, can give a variety of improvements, including:

  • Eliminating abdominal fat that doesn't respond to diet or exercise
  • Removing excess skin that remains after weight loss and pregnancy
  • Tightening loose and separated abdominal muscles caused by pregnancy
  • Aligning abdominal muscles for a more flattering appearance

Surgical Technique

Patients can expect the surgery to last anywhere from 1 to 4 hours, depending on their desired look and unique physiology. To begin the procedure, Dr. Sorokin makes an incision just above the pubic bone area and extends the incision horizontally across the lower abdomen and if needed, around to the back. The skin is then stretched away from the muscle tissue, and excess skin is removed. Abdominal muscle tissue is tightened to provide a firmly contoured stomach and well-defined waistline. Finally, Dr. Sorokin closes the incision by stitching the skin back into place. Sometimes the procedure requires an additional incision around the navel in order to provide the best results.

During/After the Surgery

For the first few days after the procedure, the abdominal area will be swollen and there will be some discomfort, which can be controlled by medication. Dr. Sorokin also uses pain pumps on all of his tummy tuck patients to minimize the pain involved in the procedure. Patients will have a drainage tube, which must be used for about a week. Patients will need to wear a support garment over the incision for several weeks. Dr. Sorokin will provide detailed instructions for showering and changing the bandages. Dr. Sorokin encourages patients to start walking as soon as possible to help blood circulation, and normal activities generally can be resumed in 2 weeks.

It may take up to a month before patients can engage in all their usual activities, and the body may need up to a year to completely adapt to the new abdominal configuration. The scars will look the worst during the first 3 to 6 months as they heal, but this is normal. After about 9 months, the scars should begin to flatten out and lighten in color. Abdominal scars from a tummy tuck are easily covered in clothing and bathing suits.

Expected Cost

A tummy tuck can cost between $5,000-$10,000. A mini tummy tuck will be at the low end of the range while a full tummy tuck will be more expensive. Dr. Sorokin will discuss costs and financing at the consultation.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

Tummy Tuck or Liposuction?

During your consultation, Dr. Sorokin will conduct a physical examination to help determine the best procedure to meet your cosmetic goals. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is the best choice for men and women with protruding abdomens caused by weak stomach muscles and excess skin and fat. Liposuction is an option for patients with toned skin but isolated pockets of fat. A tummy tuck actually repairs muscles and removes stretched skin and bulging fat, while liposuction simply removes fat. Dr. Sorokin commonly performs both procedures together for appropriate patients, often as part of a Mommy Makeover.

Full or Mini Tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery is designed to tighten the abdominal muscles and remove loose skin, two issues that are common after pregnancy or any significant weight loss. A full tummy tuck procedure addresses muscles and skin both above and below the belly button. In rare cases, only the muscle and skin below the belly button require tightening. In those situations, a mini-tummy tuck may be appropriate.

Best Candidates?

Any healthy adult with stubborn fatty areas can benefit from a body contouring surgery. A good candidate for tummy tuck surgery is someone who is in good health and whose weight doesn't fluctuate significantly. Liposuction removes fat from the body, and those fat cells never come back. However, liposuction isn't considered a weight-loss procedure. Fat cells that remain can still enlarge, so a healthy lifestyle is important. Patients who exercise regularly and have healthy eating habits will continue enjoying the results of liposuction for months and years.

Future Pregnancy?

Although tummy tuck surgery won't affect your pregnancy, patients should consider postponing the procedure until after they are finished having children. During surgery, the vertical abdominal muscles are tightened, and future pregnancies can separate those muscles.
