No one's perfect, but sometimes flabby love handles or a small roll of fat around the belly is all that stands in the way of feeling attractive and confident. Cherry Hill plastic surgeon, Dr. Evan Sorokin, uses Smartlipo, a specialized laser liposuction treatment that removes unwanted areas of fat with minimal recovery time and with less swelling and bruising than traditional methods. Smartlipo is used to remove diet-resistant fat from areas of the body where fat pockets commonly form, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, upper arms, and chin. This advanced technology is a safe and effective treatment. Dr. Sorokin combines his experienced technique with innovative technologies to help his patients achieve a slimmer look.

Unparalled Experience

Dr. Sorokin was the first liposuction surgeon in the New Jersey area to offer Smartlipo. In fact,  Cynosure, the manufacturer of Smartlipo, has chosen Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery to be a training center for other physicians. Only a small number of plastic surgery offices nationwide are chosen for this distinction and Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery was chosen based on Dr. Sorokin's knowledge, expertise, and his experience with Smartlipo and other liposuction methods.

Surgical Technique

Smartlipo is performed under local anesthesia and usually takes about an hour, depending on the location and amount of fat being removed. First, Dr. Sorokin makes a small incision near the area being treated and inserts a tiny tube called a cannula underneath the skin. This cannula has a laser connected to its tip. By activating the laser, Dr. Sorokin is able to easily break down fat cells and then suction them out through the cannula. Traditional liposuction requires the doctor to manually break up fat cells by moving the cannula aggressively back and forth under the skin. By causing less trauma to surrounding tissue, Smartlipo makes liposuction safer and much less invasive. In addition to causing less disruption under the skin than other liposuction methods, the Smartlipo laser coagulates small blood vessels at the treatment site, greatly reducing the amount of bleeding and swelling that can occur. Precision laser energy also allows Dr. Sorokin to perform subtler sculpting at the treatment site.

During/After the Surgery

Patients should remember that while Smartlipo is quick and minimally invasive, it is still a surgical procedure. Muscle aches and stiffness around the treated areas is normal for a few days. However, since so little adjacent tissue is disrupted, less bleeding, bruising, and swelling will occur. A compression garment still must be worn for 2 weeks, which is a much shorter than the time needed after traditional liposuction. Patients will need to avoid strenuous physical activity for about a week, though Dr. Sorokin encourages walking and light exercise as soon as possible following the procedure. Most patients are ready to return to work after a couple of days.

Expected Cost

Smartlipo costs between $3,000 and $6,000 depending on which areas are being worked on and how much fat is being removed. Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery does have financing options and will work with patients to make the procedure affordable.

Smartlipo FAQs

Benefits of Smartlipo?

Dr. Sorokin's patients choose Smartlipo for a number of reasons, including:

  • It is a less invasive surgery and a faster recovery compared to the traditional method
  • It requires no general anesthesia
  • It offers a comfortable recovery with less bruising and swelling
  • It creates a smoother skin tone after the procedure
  • It reaches fat deposits that are too small for traditional methods
  • It encourages the production of collagen, which tightens and firms the skin

Best Candidates?

The laser-assisted procedure is ideal for patients who are in their normal weight range, but who have small stubborn areas of fat that aren’t responding to diet and exercise. Smartlipo laser liposuction is not meant as a weight loss method – it is first and foremost a body contouring procedure that can subtly slim and reshape common areas where fat tissue forms.
