Laser Liposuction: The Changing Face of Body Contouring

Liposuction has been performed for decades, and has a reputation as a safe and effective cosmetic surgery procedure that has changed thousands of patients' lives for the better. In fact, in 2006, over 300,000 liposuction procedures were performed in the United States, with many of those patients from Philadelphia and New Jersey. Liposuction consistently ranks as one of the top five cosmetic surgery procedures.

In my practice, I am continually evaluating new technologies that improve patient comfort and surgical outcomes. Like any surgery, New Jersey liposuction can result in complications, and most patients experience a degree of discomfort following their procedure and a recovery period that can last several weeks. Even so, the vast majority of liposuction patients say that the benefits greatly outweigh the downsides, especially when they see their slimmer and more sculpted appearance following surgery.

A Better Way: Laser Liposuction in New Jersey

Now, a new liposuction technique is available to achieve body sculpting with fewer complications and quicker recovery than the traditional procedure. "Laser liposuction" can be performed using a body sculpting device known as SmartLipo™. This new sculpting procedure for New Jersey and Philadelphia liposuction patients is offered from Cynosure, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of medical treatment systems. Cynosure places great importance on physician training; in fact, the company has chosen my practice, Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery, as an official SmartLipo™ training center for other local physicians.

SmartLipo™ has made headlines in the popular media, but more importantly, this new laser liposuction option has passed rigorous peer review in medical journals. The idea behind SmartLipo™ may seem simple, but it is also revolutionary. Liposuction procedures are performed using a small suction tube (known as a cannula) that is inserted below the skin to break up and vacuum out fat deposits. The SmartLipo™ device adds a 1064 nm Nd:Yag laser to the tip of the cannula. During treatment, I activate this laser to slice through fat deposits, making precise tailoring of the procedure much simpler than with traditional approaches that manually broke fat away from surrounding tissue. Not only are the results superior, but recovery time is reduced because less tissue is disrupted and blood vessels are coagulated.

For most of my patients, I am able to complete the procedure in approximately one hour or less, depending on the location and amount of fat being removed. After a brief recovery period, laser liposuction patients can begin to enjoy their slimmer, recontoured appearance.
